A fast-paced mix of action-adventure, humour and tragedy inspired by the forgotten women fighter pilots of World War II.
Russia, 1941. The day the Germans invade, 16-year-old flying prodigy Aelya Makarova is giving flight lessons and thinking about summer vacation. Within weeks, her hometown is destroyed. When the Soviet Air Force starts recruiting women, Aelya knows how she can fight back at the controls of a fighter plane.
But the Nazis aren't the only foes she needs to face. Her female squadron is split by petty rivalries, male pilots treat them like a joke, and the perfect motherland she thought she was fighting for doesn't exist.
Put to the ultimate test in the deadly skies over Stalingrad, Aelya must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice. Because risking her life is only the beginning. What her country needs isn't a hero. It's a killer.

"I picked up this book to learn something more about the involvement of the Russian Air Force during WW II, a topic you rarely read about The author of this novel obviously researched it very well: he know the names and designations of the principal planes of both the Germans and the Russians. I had to look up what a Peshka was. The training, treatment and accomplishments of the Russian female pilots added depth to the story, and the battle and combat scenes seemed to be very realistic. Also, the depiction of life in Russia during the was comported well with other histories and historical novels that I have read. Although I learned after I acquired the book that it was listed as a "young adult" novel, it was written on an adult, not juvenile, level. The only negative is that I have to wait until the second installment comes out to see how it ends."

Sparrow Squadron Aelita War Darius Jung Books Reviews
- Sparrow squadron is the first of a series (I believe it can easily be a trilogy). I found the book to be very well rounded and can't wait to see what happens next in the story. this is what I mean
The characters and the events are very well developed. I could visualize the book like a movie as I read along. Aelita herself is very real. She is not the bravest, but she is brave; she is not the wisest, but she is wise and she is not the most emotional, but she has heart. I found her passion for flying and to be a good communist, her goal to save her country and more prominently (at least for me) her struggle with morality of killing while at war very interesting and very relevant to today's world. It also highlights the sexism that existed/exists in our society and the politics of using gender for promotion of an agenda.
The book has moments of tense action and edge of the seat suspense, but will also lighten up at points and just leave you in awe of human capacity to be good (and sometimes bad.)" - A very engaging, believable tale of air combat in world war two. Few recognize the roles of Russian women in the defeat of Hitler's Germany.

MY REVIEW
Russian involvement in fighting against Hitler's fascist regime is a topic that is often overlooked by North American authors. This is a travesty. We hear and read about the U.S. involvement in the war often through both Fiction and Non-fiction. Why is Russia so often overlooked? Is it because in the years since WWII Russia had been consistently seen as the 'bad guy?'
Whatever the reason, I was very glad to read this book and to learn about Russia and especially about its female fighter pilots.
I enjoyed the story of how one young girl follows her dreams in Communist Russia despite the many roadblocks and obstacles placed in her path which Aelya must overcome.
Aeyla's progression from naive young girl to hardened fighter pilot is an interesting part of the story.
At the beginning, Aeyla's believes all the Communist propaganda she has been taught her whole life.
The author has done an incredible job of humanizing people whom history deems as evil. For example, The German fighter pilot that is captured and questioned.
Author D.L. Jung has also used this wonderfully written work of fiction as a tool to inform his readers about the horrors of war.
Action packed and full of interesting characters and set in a time in history where emotions often overruled good sense, SPARROW SQUADRON is a MUST READ novel, not only for Young Adults but also for everyone else. I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars. âââââ
* I received a free copy of this book from the author. All opinions are one hundred percent honest.* - Aelya is a 16 year old female pilot in the Soviet Union during WWII. Separated from her family at the beginning of the war and unable to fly in the army due to her gender, Aelya is stuck digging trenches. After awhile she breaks off in search of finding a place for herself in the Air Force. She started out having a one track mind for flying but overtime learned that there was so much more to life than flying. Aelya’s story is told as she battles both physical enemies and herself.
Here’s the thing— neither Aelya nor any of the other characters were particularly likeable. They didn’t act as a group and form a camaraderie. I have brief moments where I like one of them, but then something happens and they’re just annoying and unremarkable (or too showy). They may call each other friends, but never act like it. The book was too full of hatred to find anything redeemable.
The author did an excellent job of imagery and I was easily able to picture everything that was occurring. Aelya was a strong protagonist and displayed strong emotions. I was able to not only picture her, but also started to feel much as she does about different events and people. However, the book was really slow. It was long and hard to remember names as there were many characters. When someone died, it was unremarkable because the characters were all strangers to the reader. - I picked up this book to learn something more about the involvement of the Russian Air Force during WW II, a topic you rarely read about The author of this novel obviously researched it very well he know the names and designations of the principal planes of both the Germans and the Russians. - This book is so LONG and SLOW that I seriously doubt many readers will be able to finish it. I've been reading it for DAYS now and I'm still only 38% of the way through it. It's just the same stuff over and over again. Girl wants to be a pilot. Girl gets to be a pilot. Girl doesn't get to see combat while less trained boys do. And the drama. Seriously. I DON'T CARE THAT EVERYONE IN HER GROUP DOES NOT GET ALONG! If I wanted a story featuring cliguey girls I would have read a book by Lisi Harrison. Aelya's fellow pilots just won't stop fighting each other and I honestly could care less about it just MOVE ON ALREADY. It really isn't a bad story, it's just a really long and slow one. Good luck.
I receive a free copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions are my own.
